So... how's your summer going?
Here's a brief 4 minute video where I talk with you about staying involved with us over the summer. In the video I also ask you to help us with something important!
Last night we launched our Surviving the Summer Spiritually plan. We are reading through the New Testament in 90 days (download the Bible reading plan below). We are also reading 3 books in the next 3 months. The coolest part of this plan is we are video conferencing the nightly readings and we will be hosting at least 2 or more times each month a time to discuss the book readings as well. READ MORE ABOUT THE SUMMER SURVIVAL PLAN!
THE GROWTH PROBLEM: NO PLAN FOR SUMMER GROWTH
For years, students have gone home with some very big goals for summer break: make lots of money, go on vacation someplace cool, and marry the person of my dreams! The one thing almost always left off is TO GROW SPIRITUALLY over break. This is because we leave for break without a plan. Someone once said that if you fail to plan you plan to fail. Or better said, if you aim at nothing you will hit it every time. So we want to invite you to join our family in a summer spiritual survival plan! It is all about saying YES TO JESUS over the summer break by spending a little more time with Him.
We have created a simple plan that involves a combination of reading and group sharing. We will be reading through the New Testament in 90 days. We will also be reading 3 very challenging books over break and discussing them together via Skype or Google Hangouts. We just don’t want to see anyone drift over summer break.
THE SOLUTION: JOIN OUR SUMMER SURVIVAL PLAN
We are including the New Testament in a 90 day downloadable guide that will begin on MAY 14th and end on AUG 11th. There will be set times where you all can Skype in to our nightly reading, or if you know nights you want to join in, let us know, and we will be glad to have you join us!!
We've also listed the three books of choice for the summer. We are going to read one per month. You'll want to get those soon. The Kindle version is usually cheaper and you can download the Kindle app for just about any phone or computer for free. Love Does is the book we will start on May 14th. If you would like to join us to read a book but don't have the money to buy it, please send us a quick message, and we will be happy to order the book and send it out to you!
DROP US A TEXT OR EMAIL IF YOU WILL BE TAKING UP THIS PLAN WITH US
1. READ THE NEW TESTAMENT IN 90 DAYS (Click Here to Download Plan) - 90 day reading plan: start Sunday, May 14 and finish on Friday, Aug 11. Every evening our family will try to do a live stream reading of our daily reading sometime after 9pm. We are using meet.google.com and would love for you to join in all the fun for our nightly readings.
2. THREE BOOKS WE WILL BE READING (AMAZON) - All links are for KINDLE VERSION – you’ll need to change to paperback if you don’t want the kindle version. Click on book image for link to Amazon. A few times a month we will offer a live video chat session for us to discuss the summer reading. So far we have only heard back from a few of you. I know you are busy, BUT wouldn't it be great to look back on your summer and know that you read three amazing books that helped keep you sharp over summer break?!
THE DATES OF OUR BOOK READING:
3. WE WILL BE PROVIDING LIVE VIDEO CHAT TIMES nightly for our New Testament readings and a few times monthly to discuss our book of the month.

I want to encourage you to NOT GIVE UP! You are so close to being done this semester. Yes, it looks bad for some of you, but DO NOT GIVE UP! Ask the Lord to help. Call a friend up and ask them to pray for you. Take 10 minutes, and breathe in deeply while asking God to help you get your focus back. Open up God's Word and let Him speak to you, because His Word is "Better than Cheddar!" Watch this video:
I read this during my quiet time this morning and knew I needed to share it with you!
You Have To Want To Hear from God
You’re not going to hear God unless you really, really want it. I’m not saying it’s an option. I’m not saying it would be nice. It is a necessity!
God won’t tell you about his dream for your life if he knows you’ll want to debate it. God doesn’t tell you what he put you on Earth to do just so you can say, “Let me think about it.”
No! It’s got to be a necessity. You have to say, “I’ve got to know why I’m here. I’ve got to know what you want me to do with my life. I’ve got to hear your voice. I’ve got to have your vision.”
King David wrote in the book of Psalms, “My God, I want to do what you want” and “What I want most of all and at all times is to honor your laws” (Psalm 40:8 NCV).
David was passionate in his declaration that what he wanted most of all was to honor God. Being obedient and following God were not options for him. It was the only thing David wanted to do. He used words for seeking God like, “I long for it,” “I crave it,” “I hunger for it,” and “I’m like a dear panting for water.”
When you get that desperate, you’re going to hear from God.
A lot of people talk to God, but they never hear from God. For them, prayer is a monologue. But you can’t have a relationship when it is wrapped up in a monologue from you. What if a talk to my wife, but she never talks to me? That’s not a relationship. You’ve got to have a conversation. Just as important as talking to God in prayer is listening to God and letting him talk to you. How does that happen? First, you’ve got to want it more than anything else.
Deuteronomy 4:29 says, “You will search again for the LORD your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him” (NLT). Guaranteed!
At our Wednesday night weekly worship gathering we have been challenging everyone not so much with "deeper teaching", but to apply the simple truths & lifestyle of Jesus deeply in their daily lives. Jesus did after all say, "I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE." Did you catch that? He did not just say "I am the Truth!" But sometimes we turn Jesus only into a truth dispenser. A good part of your maturity (Christian growth) will happen through daily discipline and practice within a committed community of Jesus followers. We can challenge you to participate, but it is you that have to have the will to do it, a plan to implement it, and the patient persistence to carry it out daily (maybe with a training partner!). When our ACT community and campus Christian community begin to live this out it slowly becomes part of the Christian culture! Our prayer is for followers of Jesus today to more look like, sound like, smell like, love like, and live daily more like Jesus.
Last week we challenged ACT to pray 3x daily: Morning, Noon, and Night. This was something the early Christians practiced. It was a rhythm to their life! We are sending out a scripture 3x daily via text. Students spend a few moments
If you are not receiving our texts with scriptures let Don know today so you can join us!
I'm also including a video below encouraging your times with God in prayer. We can't wait to see the fruit in our lives as we follow Jesus together.

First, WE LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU!! Second, we are excited to see each one of you do something in following Jesus that maybe you might even think is crazy, silly, just not-needed, or even dumb. I'm sure Jesus'early followers said the same thing to each other. But we have been given the task in His great commission to help you grow as his disciples. So eat your vegetables and do the homework! LOL ;-)
On Wednesday night we discussed our modern obsession with busyness, efficiency, and speed (example was fast-food). Don showed how HURRY is actually killing relationships, it's creating a lot of internal stress, and it can keep us from hearing the voice of God. We talked how Jesus wasn't in a hurry and the likely reason was because he practiced solitude. Solitude is the art of SLOWING DOWN. You may have heard people talk about how they want to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus, however, for many this does not involve doing all of the things that Jesus did (especially the uncomfortable things). Yet many today continue in Bible study after Bible study, listening to podcast after podcast, going to Christian concert after Christian concert and years later there is still little internal growth.
Does this frustrate you? I am proposing that if we want to begin to experience the intimacy Jesus had with the Father, we need to begin to walk as Jesus walked. We need to re-discover together and practice together the more uncomfortable disciplines he lived out and showed his followers.
I am including the 2 sided sheet we passed out with the scriptures showing how "SOLITUDE" was a part of the life of Jesus and his followers. Like any sport, the more you practice the better you get. It will be difficult at first, but with diligence and persistence you will get better and it will soon impact your life and the lives of those you love.
For this week we challenged you to re-read over the scriptures and begin to get alone with God. The homework includes some other practical ways to SLOW DOWN and engage with people around you as well as with God. It takes lots of practice so hang in there! I can't wait to swap stories of how your time this week went!

Tonight's message is all about SLOWING DOWN! When our kids were little they would often run like crazy people through our house and one of us "adults" would often say, "SLOW DOWN OR YOU WILL LOSE AN EYEBALL!" Well, many of us today are running like crazy people. We look at our phones like meth addicts addicted to technology promising deeper connections with others but we always have to return for more! Friends, if we want to hear the still small voice of God, we must re-learn the ancient art of "slowing down" by turning away from the noise we have become addicted to. Don't miss tonight's message: 8pm @ ACT's CAMPUS HOUSE (612 E Wooster St)
